Site conditions play a significant roll in determining the most cost effective solution of shoring. Site access and shoring depth, as well as ground and environmental conditions, such as water tables and existing structure proximity are determining factors. In recent times there has been much discussion & debate on the negative effects of sheet piling due to vibration and subsequent damage (cracking) to existing structures, hence the move towards Microfine grout soil injection solutions or board and beam methods. Steel sheet piles are long structural sections with either overlapping or interlocking joints resulting in a continuous and often impermeable barrier in the ground.
They are designed to resist horizontal forces and are mainly used for permanent and temporary walls and excavation support. Installation requires use of a vibrating hammer, t-crane and crawler drilling.

Anchoring takes many forms of pile, tendon and steel bar configurations. They can be installed at any angle to any depth in ground conditions that include sand, silts, clays, through water and rock. The selection criteria can be complex as ground and environmental conditions can at times be challenging. The requirement for anchors and tie-downs can be from uplift induced by wind and wave or overturning caused by cantilevered structures. Passive soil and overburdon pressures may require the installation of tie-backs or soil nails.
There is no other ground anchoring or tension pile method that is more cost and time efficient than our screw piling system. When assessed on a per tonne rate of tensile load capacity delivered, no other alternative competes. Anchors with load capacities of up to 1200kN can be installed in around 10 minutes.
Areas affected by wind, such as coastal and in particular the cyclonic regions of the north west, can develop significant uplift forces which can be catastrophic on a structure. Over the last 16 years Screwpile Australia has developed the most cost effective tie-down solutions resulting in the successful completion of numerous mining projects from transportable building (donga’s) based mining camps, through to overhead conveyors and other structures . Where required, tie-downs can be removed simply by unscrewing the anchor resulting in the cost effective decommissioning of buildings.
Australian Standards are a major part of any design phase and all piling or retention solutions must satisfy a number of Codes to comply with the Australian Building Code. Codes include AS2159-2009 (Piling Code), AS4100-1999 (Steel Structures Code), AS1170-2002 (Wind Actions Code), AS4678-2002 (Earth Retaining Structures Code) just to name a few. Our perpetual in-house engineering design, load testing and certification processes comply with these Codes. We have collated the testing of over 16 years of our screwpile installations.
